HIGHLIGHTS, Nov. 19, 2018, County Commissioner meeting

• Commissioners agreed to continue support to the West Region Wildfire Council (WRWC). The organization promotes wildfire preparedness, prevention and mitigation education throughout Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel counties and is funded mostly through grants and government agreements and recently obtained a grant from FEMA. “For every mitigation dollar spent, $6 is saved in disaster funds,” says Jamie Gomez, WRWC’s assistant director.

Gomez also spoke to Commissioners about the organization’s “Rapid Risk Assessment” and home mitigation programs to help residents learn about the fire risk within their neighborhoods and around their homes.

WRWC offers free site visits for homeowners who live in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). A site visit is a meeting with the resident, at their home and property, to discuss wildfire and wildfire hazard mitigation. Help to pay for wildfire mitigation is also available through WRWC with compliance of their recommendations.
