HIGHLIGHTS, April 30, 2018, County Commissioner meeting

  • Commissioners agreed to draft an Innovation Grant letter in support of Delta Brick & Climate Company — owner Chris Caskey — to produce bricks using sediment from Paonia Reservoir fired in ovens heated by methane captured from mining vents. Caskey brought his company’s idea to the Methane Working Group and was encourage to go for grant funding. Commissioner Roeber, a member of the Methane Working group, told fellow Commissioners that Caskey had produced bricks for the group as evidence that the process works.
  • Commissioners tabled the decision whether to extend a “Waiver of the Density Standard for Two Lot Subdivisions” that has been in place four-plus years. The waiver was intended to be a temporary, one-year, solution brought on by hard economic times and to encourage subdivision development. Now that the economy has improved, Planning Commissioners asked County Commissioners not to renew the waiver so that they could resume applying standard regulations when looking at subdivision requests. Commissioners will discuss the waiver and other issues around the county’s density standard at a future work session.
  • Delta County’s landfill will offer a FREE DAY on May 19 for all Delta County residents. This is an annual event dubbed “Spring Clean-Up” at the Adobe Buttes Landfill, west of Eckert at 12211 Trap Club Road. Items accepted include: brush, appliances, furniture, and tires. No household trash or electronics will be accepted as a part of this event. All loads must be secured.
  • Commissioners agreed to draft a letter in support of Grand Junction Airport Authority’s initiative to create a foreign free-trade zone within a 90-mile radius of the airport and a customs office at the airport. The zone would make it possible for area businesses to buy and export foreign goods more easily. Financial support would be needed from surrounding governing bodies if the proposal moves forward. While Commissioners agreed to support the initial idea, they wondered what Delta County businesses would benefit. Commissioner Atchley pointed out that this might be helpful for future economic development.
  • Commissioners agrees to donate road-base materials to help repair a driveway at Cedaredge High School and Cedaredge Middle School.
