JoAnn Kalenak, Senior Blogger, DCCR — At this morning’s meeting, four residents spoke to County Commissioners about proposed updates to the Land Use Code (LUC) including Niko Woolf of Crawford (pictured). He asked that approval of the proposed code changes be tabled for one year to give residents time to more fully participate in the process.
Woolf and others were under the impression that Commissioners planned to discuss the code at a Jan. 31, 2023 meeting, a date that had been published in the Dec. 28 issue of the DCI and shared by DCCR.
Calling the Jan. 31 date a “placeholder”, Commissioner Suppes told the audience the LUC would not be discussed until the Planning Commission had completed its work.
In an effort to clarify the date, the County posted a notice of cancelation of the Jan. 31 meeting on their Facebook page today but stated that they planned to reschedule for February.

Commissioners also discussed whether they should offer virtual attendance at work sessions. Commissioner Koontz, while encouraging public participation, noted that he wanted staff and those participating in work sessions to be able to “speak freely.”
Commissioner Suppes worried about the logistics and technology needed to pull off successful Zoom work session meetings citing current issues with other public meetings.
Commissioners voted unanimously to offer in-person only constituent attendance.
(Work sessions are public meetings but less formal than business meetings and often involve county staff or other advisors in extensive back-and-forth discussion. Constituents are generally not permitted to participate in work sessions.)
