HIGHLIGHTS, Commissioner work session, April 3, 2017

1) The county has received six bids to development the county’s first Trails Master Plan. Awaiting further action.

2) As District One’s representative, Commissioner Atchley awarded Fort Uncompahgre Living History Museum $5,000 to develop a native plant garden with detailed signage. The funds are coming from the county’s open space budget. Atchley cited the educational, historical and cultural value of the museum.

3) The Nature Connection, an organization that supports the Delta County School District and helps get kids out-of-doors, asked commissioners for a letter of support that would be included in the organization’s GOCO Inspire Connection grant proposal. The organization is seeking some $1.5 to $2.2 million in lottery grant funds to support an array of programs that would promote local youth in nature. “Skis for Kids,” which introduces youth to the wonderful trails on Grand Mesa, is one such program — it has gone from a handful of participants to over 2,000.

The organization conducted a survey asking local youth what activities they wanted to see grow and/or be improved in the county. Archery, biking, hiking, and camping were among the highest priorities according to the more than 3,600 surveys received.

County commissioners agreed to write a letter of support and are among several supporting groups that are helping The Nature Connection meet the 20% matched funding challenge required from GOCO for their grant proposal.

4) Saturday, May 20 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, has been set for the county’s annual FREE DAY AT THE LANDFILL. This is intended as a residential property cleanup and includes brush, appliances, furniture, tires but NO household or electronic refuge.

5) Commissioners adopted an ordinance that permits and regulates the use of off-highway vehicles (OHV) on county roads in the unincorporated areas of the county. See the ordinance here: http://www.deltacounty.com/documentcenter/view/9930
